United agree deal to sign Mata

Manchester United is pleased to announce it has reached an agreement with Chelsea Football Club for the transfer of Juan Mata for a club-record fee. The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms.

A further announcement will be made in due course.

Sir Alex handed UEFA role

Former Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is to take up an ambassadorial role with UEFA.

The Old Trafford director confirmed he will adopt another position within the game while continuing to work for the Reds.

"It is an honour and a privilege to accept this role as ambassador for UEFA," he stated.

"With the experience I have had over the years, I hope I can help young coaches, in particular, in an industry which is becoming more difficult. Young coaches have to be prepared to make sacrifices and time is not guaranteed in modern-day football because it has become very much a results industry.

"The best chance they have got is to prepare for it. I took my full coaching badge when I was 24 years of age and I thought that was the best thing I did to give myself a proper chance to be able to survive in football.

"I would also tell them not to change their own philosophy but to have faith in it and believe in themselves.

"It's also about the sacrifices you have to make. Ask any manager's wife exactly what sacrifice means because they are working all the time. They are at games, at training, they are coaching, but that's the sacrifice you have to make and you need to understand that when you start."

Michel Platini, president of the European governing body, explained the job in more detail at an executive committee meeting in Switzerland.

"Sir Alex will be chairman of the forum of elite coaches that meet every year," revealed the Frenchman. "He will also be a member of the technical study group of the Champions League and the European Championship."

Fletcher in the 50

Darren Fletcher's outing against Sunderland means only 49 men have played more times for United in the club's 136-year history.

Fletch has clocked up his 320 matches so far over 12 different seasons, playing 40-plus in five of those. His busiest campaign was 2008/09 when he played 42 games.

Vidic protective of Januzaj

Manchester United captain Nemanja Vidic says it is imperative that Adnan Januzaj's development as a player is carefully managed and that expectations are kept in check at such a formative stage of his fledgling career.

Januzaj has been a shining light for the Reds in his breakthrough season and the 18-year-old's creativity, particularly in the absence of Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie through injury, is a source United have increasingly tapped into in recent weeks. The first-team exposure has allowed his game to blossom as he takes on more responsibility, notably at set-pieces and in the attacking third of the field, but Vidic says work done behind the scenes by David Moyes, his coaching staff and the experienced members of the Reds’ senior squad is integral to Januzaj's progress.

"Adnan has done very well," Vidic says in the latest issue of Inside United magazine, on sale now. "He is a great talent and his future is in front of him. He is still young, he's just 18. So we have to be careful with him. We don't want to expect too much too soon; the manager will take care of that. Adnan has great talent but he can still improve. He will have to work hard to achieve big things, but he is definitely capable of that.

"To be successful at Manchester United you have to perform every week. That's the challenge and that's why I say that you have to be careful with young players in terms of how they develop as a person and a player. At 18, you still have to work hard to improve and get even better. He is a great talent, a very good player. I am sure he will do all he can to succeed because he has a great future."

Reds remember Sir Matt

Manchester United legends Sir Bobby Charlton and Bryan Robson have paid tribute to Sir Matt Busby, who passed away 20 years ago today.

Sir Matt’s insistence that United should be the first English club to enter the European Cup in the 1956/57 season, against the wishes of the Football League, is one that still resonates for Sir Bobby, who scored twice when the Reds won the trophy for the first time in 1968.

“I can’t believe it is 20 years since Sir Matt Busby passed away,” Sir Bobby told ManUtd.com. “Not a day goes by when I don’t think about him and what he did for the game. For all the excitement brought about by the Champions League in its modern format, things might have taken a lot longer to get where they are – and this applies to United as a club as well – had it not been for Sir Matt.

“He was the one who saw the way that football was going and he insisted that United and English football had to be involved in it. He had to go against the Football League, who said we couldn’t play in it, but he said we could, and just look where it has got us. The best players in the world want to play in the Champions League, and Sir Matt played a huge role in getting it off the ground in the first place.

“That’s just one part of Sir Matt’s great legacy, and he continues to be an enormous figure in the history of this club and this sport. His family still come to the games and he was a truly,truly great man.”

Bryan Robson arrived at Old Trafford in 1981, a decade after Sir Matt retired, but he recalled how the legendary former manager was present in 1993 to see the Reds reclaim the crown of English champions.

“I knew Sir Matt really well because he and (daughter) Sheena would be there whenever I went to a mutual friend’s house for Sunday lunch and dinner parties. I got to know Sir Matt really well, so the relationship was beyond just meeting at matches.

“He was a great man who loved his football. A really nice bloke, but my lasting memory on the football side of things was that he witnessed us winning the title in 1992/93 after so many years. That period of time – 26 years – was far too long for Manchester United, a club like ours, to go without winning the title, and to see that smile he had up in the stands when we picked the trophy up, that was a great moment.”

Fletcher backs De Gea

Darren Fletcher says David De Gea has the character not to be affected by the error that led to Phil Bardsley’s goal in extra time of Manchester United's semi-final exit against Sunderland.

The Reds were just minutes away from booking a place in the Capital One Cup final when Bardsley struck a low shot at De Gea in the 119th minute and the ball slipped from the Spaniard’s grasp and trickled over the line.

Javier Hernandez momentarily rescued the tie for the Reds with a goal in added time of extra time, and De Gea went on to play his part in the subsequent shoot-out with two penalty saves, yet Sunderland still came away as 2-1 winners on spot-kicks and booked their place at Wembley in March.

"David has been fantastic," Fletcher told MUTV. "In the last 18 months I don’t think there has been a better goalkeeper around. He really has been fantastic. He’s been a shining light, one of the big positives of this season.

"He’s disappointed, as everyone is, but he will be fine and he will show what a top goalkeeper he is. He redeemed himself in the penalty shoot-out with two saves and we should have done better with our execution of the penalties.

"All goalkeepers make mistakes and it’s just unfortunate for David that it’s happened to him tonight. But he will be OK."

Reds to assess Carrick

David Moyes has a fresh injury worry after Michael Carrick hobbled off during Manchester United's dramatic Capital One Cup defeat to Sunderland.

The midfielder was forced off after appearing to twist his ankle in the fourth minute of extra time at Old Trafford, and was replaced by Phil Jones.

Moyes was asked about Carrick's condition at the end of his post-match press conference. He replied, "I don't know [at the moment], I think he twisted his ankle."

The manager admitted that the 32 year-old may well have taken one of United's penalties in the shoot out had he still been on the pitch at the end of the 120 minutes.

"It probably wasn't the group of players we would have [ideally] chosen to take penalties," said Moyes. "Chicharito would have probably taken a penalty but he was injured. People like Michael Carrick would have been involved if he'd still been on the pitch. We didn't execute our penalties well enough."
