Five Things To Look For
The Reds are back in action in the Barclays Premier League on Sunday, with a home clash against Fulham.
Back again There will be a number of familiar faces returning to Old Trafford with the visitors. Head coach Rene Meulensteen has worked with United’s youth and reserve teams in the past, and was also Sir Alex Ferguson’s first-team coach up until the Scot’s retirement at the end of last season. Ray Wilkins is also on the Fulham coaching staff, while on the pitch former Reds Kieran Richardson, Ryan Tunnicliffe and Larnell Cole could all make an appearance.
Nemanja’s long farewell Skipper Nemanja Vidic announced on Friday that he would be leaving the Reds at the end of the season after eight-and-a-half illustrious years at Old Trafford. The Serbian defender is once again available for selection after serving a three-match ban for his red card at Chelsea and will want to give fans the perfect send-off by helping David Moyes’ side finish the season as strongly as possible, starting with three points against the Cottagers.
Remembering Munich It will be an emotional occasion on Sunday in the first game to follow Thursday’s anniversary of the Munich air disaster in which 23 people, including eight United players and three members of staff, lost their lives. The Reds will wear black armbands and there will also be tribute banners, while ‘Flowers of Manchester’ will be the final song played before kick-off.
Form guide History is certainly on our side in this fixture. In 37 trips to Old Trafford, Fulham have lost 32 times, including the last 11 in a row in all competitions and 11 out of 12 in the Premier League. Moyes has already overseen victory against the Cottagers once this season in a 3-1 triumph back in November, when three goals in the opening 22 minutes paved the way for a comfortable three points.
Deadly duo Wayne Rooney has scored more times against Fulham than any other club, with 12 to date in 19 appearances, and has been on target in each of the last three meetings. In addition Robin van Persie has faced the Cottagers 14 times in his career and has managed seven goals. Both will be out to improve those impressive tallies even further come Sunday to help United climb the table.
