Player Ratings: Stoke City 0-2 Manchester United – Awesome Young and Cleverley
David de Gea 6 - On a night where the conditions could have made it difficult for goalkeepers, United’s number one was nigh on redundant aside from a few claims from set pieces, as the home side failed to muster a shot on target.
Rafael 7 - Supported Antonio Valencia well throughout with the two particularly incisive down the right flank. Defensively, Rafael was relatively untroubled.
Chris Smalling 7 - Two good headed clearances in the first half with Peter Crouch ready to pounce capped a solid display with Smalling looking comfortable in his preferred position and he coped excellently with the unique threat of Crouch.
Jonny Evans 7 - Didn’t have a great deal to do defensively but saw plenty of the ball with Stoke sitting deep and generally brought it out from the back well. Made a couple of decent interceptions and might have broken the deadlock in the first half.
Patrice Evra 7 - Solid defensively and effective further forward, United’s skipper for the night got forward pretty well and showed great composure for his goal, rounding off a mazy run with a curling right footed finish.
Antonio Valencia 7 - Combined well with Rafael down the right hand side and saw plenty of the ball. He was not at his best with the torrid conditions perhaps playing a part, but had his moments.
Tom Cleverley 8 - Appeared to take confidence from the weekend and was a combative presence in the midfield area. Seemed comfortable as part of a midfield three and moved the ball around well in the centre.
Phil Jones 7 - Slotted into the midfield and had a turn of pace when he burst from deep. Jones provided physicality in the centre but might have done a little more in possession.
Anderson 5 - A lacklustre display from the Brazilian. Conditions certainly didn’t aid an expansive style but Anderson was ineffectual as he ambled around the soggy Britannia pitch.
Ashley Young 8 - Flashed a shot narrowly wide in the opening stages of the contest but got his first goal in 36 appearances after the restart with a 25 yard screamer. Young notched an assist too in easily his most impressive display of the season.
Danny Welbeck 6 - Industrious as the lone striker but didn’t have any real chances of note. Might have done better with a looping header from a corner, although his link-up play was sharp in and around the box.
Substitutes
Javier Hernandez 6 - Held up play upon his introduction and did very well in the build-up to United’s opener. Hernandez linked well with his team-mates but might have scored in the 85th minute.
Darren Fletcher – N/A Continued his comeback from illness with another passable outing. Kept things simple but made a number of forays forward. Roundly cheered during his ten minute cameo.
